Playa Blanca local Info

Relaxing atmosphere with the fantastic cove beaches of Papagayo

Until just a few years ago Playa Blanca was a small fishing village and a gateway for the boat going across to Fuertaventura from its small Port. Most visitors came to enjoy the lovely beaches of the area, notably the coves of Papagayo. This had long been the target of a number of hippy types who wanted to live in a hedonistic way for a few months of the year and would shake up in one of the caves above the beach. The hippies have gone and the caves are now empty, the present day visitor now prefers stay in one of the many quality hotel or apartment complexes in the area. The resort has a good sandy beach with sunbeds and parasols for rent. There are a couple of beach bars to enjoy a cold beer or snack, also a selection of cafes and restaurants close by that take care of the daily sun worshipers relaxing on the beach. The beaches of Papagayo are a real pleasure, a selection of fair sized sandy coves with clear seas and great swimming in the fresh Atlantic ocean. This is now a protected area and national park, which means that no development of any kind can take place and keeping it in its natural state for the future.
The resort has its fair share of tourist shops, the smart Rubicon Marina adds to the choice with a selection of small boutiques and other interesting  gift shops. Playa Blanca is a chilled out and relaxing kinda place, so if your looking for some night time action in the way of disco bars and clubs it means a trip to  Puerto Del Carmen which is a 20 minute taxi ride away. As for restaurants the resort and Marina have plenty of choice. Good quality Spanish food, steaks and fresh seafood are on offer. For something different maybe try a Chinese or Mexican meal, there are also some good quality Italian restaurants that offer great food and sensible prices. The bars tend to be more relaxing than hectic. A few play Ibiza style chill out music as you watch the sun go down and in the main follow on the rest of the evening in that same vein. Playa Blanca is very much a resort for those that prefer to take a slower pace type of holiday and appeals to families and couples alike.

Around the Island Of Lanzarote

There are a number of other holiday resorts around the Island. The most established is Puerto Del Carmen. It has an OK beach, lots of shops, a huge amount of cafes, bars and restaurants as well as a real nightlife scene that goes on until the small hours. The old town/port area has more of an atmosphere than newer side of town, here you can find some traditional style restaurants and tapas bars. A bit further up the coast and you come to the Arrifice, the Capital of the Island. It’s a nice place to visit for the day with a good weekly market and all the shops you need to find a gift for yourself or friends back home.

Costa Teguise is a modern resort witch has grown over the last few years. It has a number of mainly 4 and 5 star hotels, with many apartment and holiday complexes dotted throughout the resort. There is a sandy man made beach which is protected by an offshore breaker, this part of the Island often has strong winds which make it popular with wind and kite surfers.
On the north west coast lies the small seaside town of Arrieta. Its a great little place with some really simple good quality restaurants, serving the best paella, fresh fish and seafood that is to be found on Lanzarote. The wind and kite surfers flock here from all over the Island as it offers perfect conditions most of the year, although there are many rocks around this part of the coastline witch can be hazardous.
A visit to the Timanfaya national park is an unusual experience. Driving through the larva fields is something very different and is one of the few places in Europe that this is possible. The island has a number of now extinct or sleeping volcanoes, and here in the national park you can visit a restaurant that cooks your steak on the hot volcanic rock.
